In the early morning, Bernie walks out of his house carrying his brown paper lunch bag on his way to work. As he approaches his car in the driveway, he takes his keys out of his pocket and tries to unlock his car with his remote, but it doesn’t work. He tries a second and third time with no success. Shaking his head in frustration, Bernie uses his key to open the door. Then, he enters the car, starts the engine, and drives off.
In a large, strip-mall parking lot, Bernie is walking back to his car with a small bag. Once inside the car, he removes an apple from his lunch bag and begins eating it. While he does so, using a small screwdriver, he removes the old battery from his remote, unwraps the new one he has just purchased, inserts it, and puts the remote back together. When he tries the remote again, however, it still fails to work.
With his failed remote in his hand, Bernie approaches a locksmith shop in the same mall. As he enters, he is immediately stunned and intrigued by the beautiful, dark-haired girl behind the counter. She, however, barely looks up as he explains his problem. Obviously uninterested in Bernie’s remote, she silently reaches for a business card and hands it to him. Disappointed by her lack of interest, Bernie looks at the card which includes only a web address: www.remotepossibility.com. Bernie considers asking the girl a question, but again, she seems so uninterested that he gives up and exits.
Later that night, Bernie sits down at his laptop computer. He pulls the business card out of his wallet and types in the address: www.remotepossibility.com. When he does so, the following screen appears.
Bernie finds his code on the back of his remote, types it in, and hits enter.
Then, the following screen appears:
Bernie hits “Enter.”
Bernie hits “Enter” again.
Once more, Bernie hits “Enter.”
Bernie lies down on his bed, dreaming of the things he can unlock with his remote:
Best Buy for a new television;
Harley Davidson for a new motorcycle;
Corvette dealership for a new car;
Bank for money.
Early, the next morning, Bernie visits Best Buy and considers using his remote to open the door to go in and take a television. As he’s about to hit the remote, however, he reconsiders and drives to the Harley Davidson dealership.
At Harley Davidson, he does the same thing: he considers using his remote to open the door to go in and take a motorcycle. As he’s about to hit the remote, however, he reconsiders and drives to the Corvette dealership.
At the Corvette dealership, he goes through the same routine: he considers using his remote to open the door to go in and take a Corvette. As he’s about to hit the remote, however, he reconsiders and drives to the bank.
At the bank, he does it again: he considers using his remote to open the door to go in and take some money. As he’s about to hit the remote, however, he reconsiders and drives back to the locksmith shop.
As he enters, the dark-haired girl is just as bored and uninterested in Bernie as she was previously. This time, though, Bernie hits the button on his remote, and a change occurs. She looks up, smiles brightly, and says “Hi, how are you? What can I do for you?”
